Figured it would be worth posting here, spotted this previously unseen artwork of Ardyn in XV Ultimania that I just got.
Oooh very nice. Thanks for sharing.

Got anymore of Ardyn? Or any other character for that matter?

Wish the Ultimania was in English, otherwise I would've snagged it by now.

And is it just me or... isn't that the throne for Versus XIII? The throne we have now looks nothing like this.

It's not just you:

Interestingly enough, there was a second throne on which we saw Regis sitting in the 2011 trailer:

...which is still different from the FFXV version, but is a plausible antecedent given some similarities in proportion (i.e., relatively large in comparison to its occupant) and apparent material composition (i.e., stone and gold leaf).

IIRC, the throne Noct sat on in the Versus trailers was implied to have been located in the Crystal's room, while the one Regis sat on wasn't. The rest of the Ardyn artwork is consistent with the Crystal's room as portrayed in Versus as opposed to Regis' throne as portrayed in either Versus or XV.

I think we might be looking at some very compelling evidence that Ardyn's role in Versus XIII would have been substantially similar to his current role. If the throne on which Noct is sitting is associated with the Crystal rather than rulership of the country, even the "throne as altar of sacrifice" element could have been in play early on.

It's also worth considering that the throne in question was absent in the 2013 trailer for FFXV, which could suggest it becoming a "post XV-1" sort of thing (as one might expect of an endgame element).

Completely agree with what you said in the first sentence in the spoiler tag. It only makes sense after all, after seeing this artwork of Ardyn.

I quite like the design we have now. Not too keen on the design for the one Regis is sitting in though.

Just goes to show that they've been changing a lot of things during development (or different iterations of the same thing to be specific) if a throne of all things went through different phases.

Yeah I do. By the way that chair Noctis was sitting on in the 2006 trailer/poster that Ardyn also has his foot on in that artwork is the same chair Regis is sitting on in the meeting room in the 2008 trailer and Kingsglaive, though the chair is in the Crystal chamber.

The throne Regis was sitting on in the 2011 trailer was different to both.

Anyway here's some artwork.

That Ravus art is quite interesting

In past trailers up to E3 2013 he was always shown with a hood over his head, which they later switched to revealing his facial features fully. And if i'm not mistaken, those artwork designs were made during the Versus XIII 2010-2011 days? If so, could Ravus' old hood design have been a placeholder on purpose all along?

Yeah, Roberto Ferrari confirmed that the Ravus design in the final game was done prior to 2012 by Mihara Nobuyoshi, Mihara Nobuyoshi left Versus XIII team in 2012 and went onto the XIV team according to him so the Ravus design would have been done prior to then. I also just noticed that silver thing on his arm right looks like the mask he had over his eyes in the 2013 trailer.

I've always found the whole Ravus design thing quite fascinating as his hooded design was shown from 2008 to 2013, but then we've confirmation that his final design was completed by Nobuyoshi who left Versus the year the restructure happened at 2012/moved on to FFXIV. He also has Fenrir on his mechanical shoulder brace in the artwork (same as E3 2013).

I wonder what purpose the hood served. I'm thinking it's an aesthetic thing and not something like him going blind or whatever. I think we'd hear some stories if something did happen for him to get the hood in all of the postmortem stuff by Ferrari and the Ultimania. Also, he takes off the hood when he fights Noctis in the 2008 DK Sigma trailer, which really makes me think it's purely aesthetic. Whatever it is, I think the fans for years expected it to be something related to his eyes or whatever. That's looking less and less likely since we haven't heard anything about it.

In preproduction shots for Kingsglaive Ravus also already had his magitek arm and it had the Fenrir symbol on it too, this is from around 2015 or so.

Compared to the final shot in 2016.

I feel like his hood in the 2013 trailer was merely just a piece of cloth he had over his current outfit, just like the hoods that Class 0 had in their intiial trailer then threw them off, and the mask over his eyes he had was that thing he has on his right arm.

Yeah, Nomura just likes hoods with his designs/stuff he works on. It's likely nothing more than that. The hood was part of a cloak worn on top since the outfit underneath seen in the E3 2013 trailer looks the same as what he has now. Maybe something happens for him to be able to use magic in the 2008 DK Sigma trailer or that was a trait of his before rewrites (or it's just a thing Nomura thought was cool).

EDIT: I think this also shows the fanfics/hopes/wishes people had of characters stem from the smallest things. I'm guilty of this as well, but not everything is as good or interesting as what it initially might seem.

Completely random but is there official data of how tall the characters are?

From what I'm seeing, Ardyn and Cor are tied for tallest and sturdiest, with Gladio coming in second, Ignis, Noctis, then tiny Prompto (he's awesome not hating at all lol)

Cid is unbelievably short it's almost endearing lol

Replayed the ending the other day, and I just noticed how small Noctis is compared to Ardyn when Ardyn grabs Noctis by the collar, drags him up from the ground, then shoves him away before they both activate Armiger and tear shit up.

It's kinda funny for some reason. I mean it makes me think Ardyn could've wrecked Noctis if he wanted to but was holding back cuz rest was more of a priority than whipping the "boy" King.

For what it's worth, I'm kinda glad they tried to make a wide range of body types for the guys.

I still remember people running wild with theories about Ravus having "eyes that see the light of expiring souls" because he had his eyes closed in the 2013 trailer, which you could only tell by zooming in and brightening up the shot where his eyes are briefly in frame.

Unknown, Unknown
Unannounced expansion, "WORLD OF VERSUS" to be unveiled at E3 2017 (release Q1 2018.) Expect this to be of a much darker tone than the base game. Covers "The demons Noctis faces during his 10 year slumber." This is the "VERSUS" world, the world of dreams that Noctis can enter in his slumber. Themes of loss and tragedy will be developed and expanded upon.
If this is true that DLC better be 150 hours long, include the Citadel fight, and include that Leviathan fight from E32013.

Or if it's a 2-4 hour long DLC it better lead into this

http://tay.kinja.com/nyrens-corner-final-fantasy-versus-xv-rumor-surfaces-f-1790258447

If not then don't bother, don't try to cram the entirety of Versus XIII in a 2 hour DLC, please Square don't give me a brain aneurysm
