Does it really matter though? A scene can still be moving if it's done right. Since when does a playable flashback triumph over a cutscene ten fold? It can still be effective.
It does. That doesn't mean I preferred the old "playable cutscenes" approach that Nomura wanted to implement. Even though I didn't get to experience them, I wasn't fond of that idea in the slightest. I prefer traditional cutscenes.

What matters, though, is that this is a reminder of how much things have changed; for better or worse.

After playing the final part in Shadow of the Colossus, I would rather see less cut scenes in favor of player participation. Most developers would turn that final part into a cut scene and I'm glad they didn't because I felt responsible for what happened. I was in control of things and I failed (even though that's what was suppose to happen). If that part was a cut scene, I think it wouldn't have that much of an impact because the player would be playing the role of an observer.

Gameplay that complements the story. That's what I want to see more of.

Well... let's be perfectly clear here. Tabata said THAT SCENE wasn't going to be playable. Does anyone object to this in any way? Is anyone dying to play as sleeping Noctis?

How about before we jump to conclusions saying "Tabata changing things again" we actually think about what is being said here. This specific scene isn't playable, and for good reason... there's nothing to play. Look at the Behemoth scene in the Demo to get a sense of what an interactive cutscene will be like. These are still going to be in the game, there will be plenty more you can bet going forward, they made it a point to show one off as a core gameplay component like all the other implementations in the demo.

So... yeah, who cares if you can't play as sleeping Noctis and press Square to pay respects to the crying Regis? Literally NO ONE should care or complain about this.

Yet another interview with Hajime Tabata.
One particular highlight from the interview:
Is it safe to assume that this is the most expensive game ever made, if account for the entire development cycle, before you took over?

No, it's not, even including that. From what I've heard, we're nowhere near what Destiny or Grand Theft Auto V [cost].

But Destiny's budget is projected over a ten-year timeline.

I suppose if you consider it from when we started Versus XIII, we've been at it for ten years as well. The budgets for all of our projects are controlled quite strictly, but on a company level, so it's not been allowed to go that far out.

If i remember correctly, Destiny budget was more or less $500M (though over half of it came from the marketing, not the development) and GTAV was $265M, though i spect the game to be at least beyond $100M or higher than what FFXIII worthed.

Some new tidbits:

- On Regis' "redesign": Tabata said that they didn't change his design because it wouldn't fit into FFXV anymore (he actually thinks it's a great design) There's a really good reason for his new design but he can't talk about it just yet becaue it's a heavy spoiler for the rest.of the game.

- Stella's powers from the 2008 (versus XIII ) trailer are most likely not in the game. Those were just some early concepts.

- There are two types of magic in the game. One of them is only used by the Lucis family.

- You won't be able to shoot magic from your hands in FFXV. You will manipulate the elements in the environemtn instead.and the magic will usually be activated by special rings that the characters can wear.

- Magic is currently ~60% done. It already works gameplay-wise but they're not happy with the visual effects yet.

- Trivia: When he was in Germany last week Tabata really wanted to drive on the German Autobahn but the PR people didn't let him. ^^

- The dog in the latest trailer is a messenger of one of the characters.

- He also confirmed once again that fishing is in the game.

So the reason of this change is that the earlier design is Noctis when he's a father :p

- There are two types of magic in the game. One of them is only used by the Lucis family.
Yes and the other one is that can everyone use as the interview said.
So the Lucis magic is the summon sword and the other one is normal magic?

- You won't be able to shoot magic from your hands in FFXV. You will manipulate the elements in the environemtn instead.and the magic will usually be activated by special rings that the characters can wear.
So Luna can also use magic, she wears that ring or is it just a ring for marriage?
And also she wanted to give Noctis a ring, so does that mean he can not use magic in the beginning of the game?

- Stella's powers from the 2008 (versus XIII ) trailer are most likely not in the game. Those were just some early concepts.
Yes, but before he said that, he mentioned something. I quote it.
''Her transformational skills, yes.'' Than he speaks about the earlier concepts, so is he saying that her skill are there in some other way or is he just saying ''oh okay let me think about her transformational skills''?

There was also a question about Ultima and Flare, if there are in the game. But he said they are looking for different spells to get a satisfied feeling and that these things fits together, instead of having much magic spells that they are not good-looking. So quality is more impportant than quantity.
Tabata also said, if they are aiming 30fps, there is a low chance to get 1080p.
And if they focuses to get 1080p, they have to cut some features in the gameplay, but they don't want it,
so 30fps are more important.

I translated the part regarding Stella's magic skills and that transformation scene from the old trailers:

"Spieletester.com:
Stella's powers and magic were very popular. Are they gone or still in the final game?

Hajime Tabata:
Her transformation skills, right. Hmm, they were from a very early version of the game, everything was pre-rendered. When we wrote the new story, we could, of course, just have used everything from the old trailers and recreated it exactly the same way. But we didn't want to implement everything that was already there come hell or high water. As long as it doesn't fit the game perfectly, it shouldn't be in it, we think. The most important thing is to make FFXV the best game it can be. Of course we understand that many really liked those scenes, but we're trying to include elements that will trigger the same feelings with fans. We understand what you want and we want to give you that, but not by forcing the inclusion of things that don't fit. Do you/they (?) understand that? I just want to be honest regarding our motives."
