Why do people keep making comparsions to MGSV all of a sudden?. What the fuck?. Not sure I understand that.
It's the same as the FFXIII effect. People had certain expectations for both of those games and had the rug pulled from underneath them, so the closest sign to anything similar will evoke that fear. The MGSV comparisons are about the fear of a lack of story because they said they were making a lot of it told via in-game dialog. Nothing WE didn't already know, but others are just getting that news now.

Another bit on the second half and how you can return to the first half:
To make clear the distinction between the two halves of the game, if you want to return to the open-world area you'll need to travel 'back in time' when at a save point. Once there, you can mop up any unresolved side-missions, until you're ready to return to the present.

It was already clear when they showed that Epilogue loadscreen :) Sounds good for me. These 20 days will be painful.

Does it mean that
the whole second half is post time skip and with old Noctis?

Something people have noted about the preview. It's got PC listed among its platforms. Which is a rather glaring error, as the preview should only be for PS4 and XONE. The rest of the preview seems alright. Parkin is a reliable video game journalist, a veteran whom I've seen on multiple sites including 1UP, Eurogamer and Edge. And he's also one of the harshest video game critics around today.

Does it mean that

That I find slightly difficult to believe.
Tabata said that it wouldn't be the entire second half in an interview somewhere.

All over
I just read the whole thing. "Negative" is not what I'd use to describe it. "Mildly critical" is a better description. And these criticisms are for elements that we've known about for years now. Some items:

- No playable female characters
- Linear progression the back half of the game -- they used the term "traditional" and did not compare it to FFXIII.
- Battle gets chaotic with lots of enemies on screen (the devil you say!)

But frankly, I thought it was quite positive overall, which is saying something considering Edge's reputation.

that's the weird part,
we already seen young Noctis on the second continent, train segment, there's other cities to explore, yet the previewer says it's only linear parts on the post-time skip.

i don't think the second half he's talking about it's the same we're thinking.

if it is, there's awful implications like: will the regalia be only able to fly on the first continent, open world half?

To be honest, I only consider that preview to be "negative" to those who can't handle any sort of criticism towards the game. Those who expect a (near-perfect) game.

Everything he wrote sounds fair and rational. Whether I'll end up feeling the same way after playing the game is yet to be determined. It's a good preview.

People need to lighten up.

Edit: the same, but in the other direction, is aimed at those who are jumping on any tidbit that's critical or negative towards the game and sharing it on all sites and Twitter in a passive-aggressive manner. It's sad to get enjoyment out of a game potentially being worse than what fans hope for it to be.

Hmm, only one thing from this can be considering as negative actually. I don't see how no playble female or traditional FF structure is negative.

I would like to know why their preview sounds like a review rather than a preview. I mean 40 hours isn't that much for a game that has tons of side content which is said to be around 200 hours or so. Did he say that he finished the game?. I didn't read the preview becuause I didn't want to be spoiled on certain things.

You should assume that most reviewers will not be doing a lot of sidequests and what not. No reviewer is going to spend 100+ hours on a game like this, or any game at all.

I think if we're all going to be on the same page here, conversationally, let's just agree to call the linear portion the "second half" regardless of whether that's the last 10% or the last 50%. It's probably more accurately Act 3, but we all know what we're referring to.

As for the spoilered question:

I believe that strongly suggests that the cutoff here is the young/old Noctis. Just because there's a scene on a train with young Noctis doesn't mean that that's the only train. The whole concept of going back in time (which we already knew, BTW) to go back to the open world strongly suggests that you're old Noctis for the linear part, and when get to a save point you "reminisce" about your time as a young buck running around Eos with the boys.

It kind of suggests to me that that second half, act 3, last 10%, whatever, is also probably closer to the Omen trailer than the rest of the game. If that's the tone it's bringing, then please, by all means, hit me with a 10 hour hallway simulation. Uncharted games are 10 hour hallway simulators and no one cares because they're done right. That's all that matters

The bolded is the only thing that annoys me on a negative piece. It's not that it's got some criticisms, it's when people take the quotes out of context and deliberately try to make everything out to be the end of the world. Take anything out of context and it can totally sound like the end of the world. And we live in a twitter world, so those out of context clips are all that spreads and all that does is fuck up the conversations about it because people who actually understand it are constantly having to correct people and come off like blind fanboys when all we're trying to do is put things into proper perspective to have a legitimate intelligent conversation about something other than talking points.

We've had enough of that kind of bullshit here with the voting fiasco... Oh, god, you're gonna get me off on a rant...

I know, i just don't want to read because of spoilers, there is already enough for me :)
OOHH, gotcha, lol. I didn't read it either. Sounds like it's written by someone that's hyper critical and behind in the times, so there's nothing in it for me. I trust the internet to overreact to anything in there worth talking about, lol

I've only read the quotes from other people. It just implies it, I think. Nothing specific about it.

Starting to think that the train part isn't considered the linear portion of the game. I just think it's were some good story beats will happen before. Anyhow, wait for other previews. it only takes one to make people worried. That edge article almost made no comments on the content of the linear portion, which seems to be more like the omen trailer. We have no idea when it happens and I doubt it does 20 hours into the game.

EDIT: Btw that french coverage on the game is supposed to come out today with new info, so keep an eye out for it.
