Also don’t forget Kingsglaive. But looking at this, I’ll say that it’s not normal to have to pay for so much “other media” to enjoy a single game’s story. Throw the brotherhood anime in there and this disjointed project ends up being nothing but a mess that’s impossible to follow without online guides and a large investment of cash.

Well done SE, this is one hell of an anniversary update, you sure got me excited..
Yeah, I might not even touch Kingsglaive or Brotherhood, I still think those two things were things that hurt the game's story at launch, and still feel that way now. I shouldn't have to get different media to enjoy a single story or anything, it just makes it feel like a train stopping short at every stop at every station with no known destination in sight, that's how I view things like that.

EDIT: I'll come with a more elaborate write up later.
While the situation is not ideal it is also a far cry from a gloomy doom train that some (justifly) upset fans are jumping into.

Let's calm down for a moment and think of the situation.

While us getting less content than previously promised is not the ideal ending, it's also hardly the worst thing.

We need to put a bit of perspective, we are coming to a close of the SECOND year of DLC for the game, we have had plenty of content in those 730 days with a bit more content for the beginning of the THIRD year to come. How many single-player AAA or similar production value game get that much time of support? Isn't that more than enough?

What I'm trying to say is this is NOT a situation where the game had a short life of content cut even shorter (4 DLCs, many collaborations, many QoL updates, timed quests, an expanded last dungeon, PC release, mod support, extra Multiplayer support, new gameplay mechaniques with Armiger, playable Chocobros in main game and more, a farcry from short content), this is just a game with a long life of content not being stretched far longer than it needed.

I'm not saying don't be upset with the third year being cut short but don't go saying all this is a failure as we're still getting that third year of content and what's left of this year.

What we are still getting before support wraps up:

  1. Collaboration with FF14
  2. Standalone Multiplayer + its new content
  3. Ardyn DLC
  4. The other 3 stories from the cancelled DLCs in some form.

And above all else, we're still getting a freaking THIRD year of content, a short third year but a third year nonetheless.

The end is not as gloomy as parotted. The end is not as ideal as we would have liked. The end is just serviceable.

Final Fantasy XV had a good run since its release and was journey packed with content and that is all that matters. And the recent news won't take that away from me.

So with them saying that the Windows version support being ceased, it means no extensive modding tools will be available either? If so, this hurts more than anything in this whole situation.

The community's passion could uplift so many of the game's flaws if given proper means to do that. But now not only do we not have the modding support, but with the implemented anti-debug measures, it will practically be impossible to do anything about the game in its current version.
Yet another unkept promise to the book..
Reddit mods saying they already contacted them for a statement to clarify because the thing going around is apparently something from the comrades section and just comrades.

Also edit, Sylva might finally spill whatever he knows.

It was a good run guys. Good memories.

But the Ardyn trailer was clearly low budget. Not super hopeful of its quality.
I noticed that, too. By comparison to EP Iggy this new episode look worse in terms of graphics and cinematic quality. I hope we’re wrong since it’s just a teaser but I have a feeling the budget was axed harder than we think.

Also noticed that. It's still work in progress, but by today's standards the animations, lighting and texturework looked very low-quality. Plus a bunch of reused assets from Insomnia.

I mean reused assets from Insomnia isn't really a big deal. What did we expect, a totally different landscape? All I personally wanted wanted at the least was the new chapter 14 map in a pre destroyed state so that we could see at least some part of Insomnia in pristine condition so I'm honestly fine with the reused map. Also we have to remember the episode is coming out in March. That's quite a while away so they'll iron out the finer details near release. For something still a little under half a year away that only started production this year it looked really good.

Also I'm fine with the trailer not being flashy. It was short and to the point and didn't waste anymore money or man power than needed on useless shit like putting together an entire theatrical trailer for a single piece of content. Honestly wish they would have put literally anything else on the chopping block instead of the character DLCs and mod tools. Would've happily given up the FFXIV collab so that we could could at least get just one more of the character DLCs out. Hell I'd willingly sacrifice Comrades' updates entirely as well as that redundant re-release if it meant getting more manpower towards the character driven stuff.

I feel like even though Square treated them unfairly BD2 should've known what to prioritize since fans have been asking for more story content and world building from day one. So focusing on a collab we had already let go of and a standalone version of a multiplayer component that's gonna be dead on arrival seems extremely foolish.

Yeah, I don't mind a potentially re-used map either, and I'm fine with it as well, I'm just looking forward to more Ardyn and the story in the DLC. I would've sacrificed Comrades or the Tom Raider or Terra Wars collabs to get Aranea's Episode in addition to Ardyn's.

it is such a shame that those episodes beside ardyn's where cancelled. however if nearly all resources had to to be shift to this New AAA title then it has to be a really big project. looking at the news Tabata wasn't fired he left willing . the reason he left is because well from the sounds of it he just wants to do his own thing and felt like he couldn't at Square Enix.

so he's going to start his own business . this is the start of a new chapter in the life of Tabata. I wish him great success in his project as it would be something he can fully called his own. FF XV sold 8.1 million copies in September so it defiantly was a financial success.

We'll see how Nomura does, if the first chapter of VII will live up to the original.
You mean Hamaguchi.

That kinda feels like Tabata screwed over Square, his employees that had been working on the project, and the fans.
No, it doesn't at all. It is unequivocally SE higher ups fucking him and the team over. Terada had been director on the DLC not Tabata, the DLC being cancelled came from the higher ups as a result of them restructuring to move them to the new AAA IP, not because Tabata left.

Here we go. Hamaguchi is not listed as the director. He is a Development Leader. Nomura is listed as the sole director of the game. You can easily look this up.
How did Square Enix screw over Tabata, if he left on his own accord? Did they screw him over by rewarding him with his own studio?

Ep. Ardyn seems to actually break Kingsglaive's canon now though, as Regis should know who Ardyn is if you confront him.

Disappointing, but honestly I'd rather forget Kingsglaive ever happened and just accept it happened off screen in game.

I really wished they'd bring back the AC mission though, it should never have been a limited time collaboration, all of that effort only to never see it again.

On top of this, I'm holding out for a smaller DLC/update in vein of the Royal Pack. These devs said episode ardyn is supposed to deliver more closure, but I wonder if that's actually happening via the DLC and not a separate update. The reason I say this is because they probably are going to want to make a new edition with the ardyn DLC, but a good incentive is to have one more content drop for the base game like the Royal pack. Give us summanable bahamut or playable Luna in spirit from her flower. Those things still exist in the datamine.

Edit: Even just a simple " would you like to start Episode ___?" At specific parts of the story so we can experience it fully without pacing issues.

Personally, I'm fine with the direction Ardyn's DLC, especially since we may get flashbacks to Ardyn's past in it, in addition, there's going to be a prologue animation for Ardyn's story, too, as well as pre-destroyed Insomnia being where it takes place as a bonus, which I wasn't expecting I will say, so I was pleasantly surprised at the setting, even though I detest utilizing different media to see an entire story, but I'm willing to see it with the DLC, especially if it retcons parts of Kingsglaive, that movie was something that shouldn't have existed in my opinion, but I'm really sad and mad that they cancelled Aranea's DLC, that was such a buzzkill move Square Enix did.

There's no reason to think Regis wouldn't already know Ardyn though. You can see in there meeting on KG that he introduced himself to the audience not to Regis. And Regis did have a look of fear in his eyes during there first encounter.

Episode Ardyn breaking KG canon was actually my first thought as well but I'm sure the devs have to know this as well. Hell they're even bringing KG back to Japanese theaters for the second anniversary with Ardyn's prologue as a bonus for the attendees. So clearly KG is still important to FFXV in the devs' minds. I'm beginning to think that Ardyn fighting Regis might be either an alternate route or it's just the challenge fight of his Episode. Remember when people thought Cor was Gilgamesh due to the tricky editing Square did with Episode Gladio's trailer?

If anything if its neither of these things and Ardyn did canonically face Regis then I'm sure they've got a story reason in mind to explain it all. This is Ardyn we're talking about after all. The master of illusions and the man who stopped time on the train. It wouldn't be hard to believe he could use his strong magical capabilities to wipe Regis' mind of the encounter.
