Yeah, I'm really glad they salvaged it. Even if it's not exactly the same character being portrayed, or at least not under any specific name, it's still one of my favorite Amano artworks.

The developers have said that while Kingsglaive connects with the events of the game, it can also be enjoyed as a standalone experience. They're not doing something like Advent Children where knowledge of the story is necessary. So I'd say it's a hybrid between a " teaser with high production value" and a standalone film. Probably leans more towards the latter due to the inclusion of so many original characters, along with characters who are less prominent physically in the game like Regis and Lunafreya.
Who knows how the final product will be, but they said that they wanted this to be its own thing: something you can enjoy without playing XV or being interested in doing so (and viceversa, you don't need KG to understand XV). It's obviously going to be better if you see/play both, as it's more lore and characterization, but that should be about it.
I hope it's good enough, to be honest. Really dislike AC, but this looks much more my thing in terms of initial concept and art design (it is true, though, that the main characters are way too unoriginal and samey, although I prefer their overall look in clothes and hairstyles to the Noctis and co's ones).
Yeah, I'm assuming they changed Etro in some ways, maybe even her name. I haven't heard a single thing about Noctis' powers to see the dead, so I guess that part has been entirely scrapped.

What did they screw up? They're just saying they were shown a pre-alpha build. I'm pretty sure GI did, too, but they just labeled it pre-beta. To my knowledge, they've never announced what stage they're even currently in, but either way, they'd be showing the press scenes from an outdated snapshot of a development build anyway.

My point was that it is pretty obvious at this stage that they were not shown a "pre-alpha" build. It literally makes no sense that they would have been shown such an old build of the game at this stage, especially considering we can see new features, such as the stamina meter, that were not included in the "Pre-Beta" build that Game Informer looked at it. Tabata mentioned back in the January ATR that they were allowed to announce the release date once they game reached the "Beta" phase. It is now late May, so the game is in Beta.

On a slightly different topic (the IGN dev diary leaves me cold as of this episode), I noticed something interesting interesting in the latest images for Kingsglaive. FF Union did a feature a while back about how scenes from the first Kingsglaive trailer were mirroring trailer footage from the Versus XIII days. I've just seen something else that seems eerily familiar in setting, tone and subject. See the two images posted below, and you'll see my point:

That's what I mean. I don't think that is obvious at all. For one, this one looks sharper than the GI footage, so it very well could be a pre-alpha PC build compared to a pre-Beta PS4 build. It could also be that GI assumed it was pre-Beta and not pre-Alpha and Square corrected IGN. Any demo they show off is going to be older than what they're currently on anyway, but even then, there's never been any kind of confirmation that they're even in Beta yet. Beta is pretty close to finished. That looks awfully rough. Pre-alpha is plausible.

This is shown in the menus for selecting a weapon. As we know, FFXV's weapons have a RANK which determines how powerful a weapon is. You are more likely to keep weapons in this game due to their functionality. Weapons in this game can also grow as well with abilities.
This section here is showing the categories that you can scroll through to equip a weapon.
Sword, Greatsword, Spear, Knives, Gun, Shield, Machines, Royal Arms, Magic

Hmm. I remembered that same clip wrong then. Well, I stand corrected on that point, but the rest still stand.The terms alpha and beta are pretty loosely defined in general, so its mostly splitting hairs, but it's still totally plausible that they were given a pre-alpha PC dev build for the demos, and it could well be that they're using that build to try out new tweaks before adding them into the main console version.
Edit: They also may well have totally fucked up, too. lol. I was just tossing that out there.

OR maybe it's about machine-based weapons, whatever that might be (ability to summon mechs? :3)? It really does look like a cog, so yeah.

I think Shuriken belongs to the Secondary Weapon class (the second from the right). Or at least that was the case with Platinum (it actually had a "V" on that rectangle. Don't know if it's weapon specific or just has been changed).
I remember some outlet (IGN? GI?) saying that there were weapons they couldn't talk about or something like that (sorry if I'm making this up or misremembering, haha). So I guess this might be that.

My take-away from all this, especially since I discovered this and in-light of today's (to me somewhat surprising) reveal that even the Etro painting survived the transition, is this: I think it is almost safe to say that the biggest thing that has changed between Versus and XV may well be the choice of westernizing the cast for Kingsglaive, while keeping the original ambiguously asian looking characters for Brotherhood and the game.

Well, Lightning Returns released in November 2014, and the Ultimania released the following month. Same kind of thing with Type-0 and other FF titles. They seem to release a month or two after the game itself, and are announced well before that. So we'll probably see the first Ultimania in October or November. I say first as all the mainline titles have had at least three Ultimanias dedicated to them, each one filled with interviews and behind-the-scenes goodies: from X to XIII, it's been split into scenario (world info, earlier story drafts and such), battle (deconstructing the battle system) and "omega" (basically the super-secret behind-the-scenes stuff, and little teases from developers)
