Hyrule Warriors will not support amiibo
If you were holding out hope for amiibo support in Hyrule Warriors, you can let that hope go now. When Nintendo was asked about Hyrule Warriors supporting amiibo, they said the following.

"Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be the first game to support amiibo. Other games that will support amiibo include Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10 and Yoshi’s Woolly World, with more to come."
No toys for you!

After Skylanders and Disney Infinity etc, I can see why they want a piece of the pie. In theory, it's perfect for the target audience of kids. I know some older fans will want them for collector's sakes and whatever, but I don't want them going down a path of making us need to buy an expensive figurine to unlock a DLC character or something. I can't see what good they're for otherwise. If it's just to transfer data to take to someone's house, that's stuff that could be done using an online account system, or simply whack it onto an SD card. The less I am required to use amiibo, the better, but definitely understand the intent if they market to kids.

I am concerned about them planning for MK8, though. I really do want DLC characters - I'm campaigning for Dixie Kong - but for the love of god, don't make me need to buy an expensive Dixie figurine to unlock her. What else would they use them for in MK8 otherwise? But yeah, off-topic thoughts -.-

I don't know why people were excited about amiibo on the first place... seems like a waste of money to me.
You can say that about a lot of things.

Skylanders is a billion dollar IP and Disney’s Infinity is on course of becoming a billion dollar IP too. It makes too much sense for Nintendo to make there own figures as well as they have a large portfolio to work from. Kids and collectors will gobble amiibo up.

For Super Smash Bros, once you scan your amiibo into the game, you can fight against it, team up with it in battle and watch it battle other in-game characters. You’ll also be able to increase its stats too. The amiibos behave depending on how you customize them and how they have leveled up.

They will basically become the ultimate sparring partner, something you can’t get with a level 1-9 CPU as they are programmed to always play a certain way. You're customizing this figure, you're training with it and you're growing as a player with it.

You can basically fight yourself!

if it's just to transfer data to take to someone's house, that's stuff that could be done using an online account system, or simply whack it onto an SD card.
Yeah but they'd be missing out on all the money if they did that. I'm pretty sure all the ideas Nintendo comes up with will be something that wouldn't require a figure.

At least we get a nicely sculpted figure though! :p

lol true enough. I'm just concerned about them being used to get DLC characters and being overpriced, and not offering a cheaper eShop-only alternative.

Hopefully all the DLC costumes, etc. will eventually be available on the eShop. Day one DLC is bad enough but DLC exclusives are a headache.

Hyrule Warriors - Famitsu review commentary
Yoshida: 9; Seriously. It’s “Warriors” and “Zelda”. You got the action of “Warriors” and the charming worlds of “Zelda”, and it sounds too fun! The foundation of the gameplay is definitely “Warriors”-based, and although there is a lack of puzzle-solving, the two works are fused together so nicely and truly became a top-quality means of entertainment. In Adventure Mode, you move around and solve puzzles in the style of the original 8-bit Zelda. In Hyrule Warriors, you will enjoy a great combination of both freshness and nostalgia, and that is a very good thing.

Jigoro: 9; While not destroying the world of Zelda, the action has been modeled after the “Warriors” series and it is exhilarating. You will be firmly placed in the battle, which is also good. Fans will smile at the small details which can be found here and there, and it is good. The soundtrack is arranged in a familiar “Warriors”-series style, and the feeling is very uplifting. I also feel great during each mission because the checkpoint system treats you very kindly if you fail.

Namuko: 9; “The Legend of Zelda” has a history and is receiving a secondary creation, and the final product is a winning combination. Deriving from the “Warriors” series, you are a lone commanding officer and are seeing the perspective of two armies battling, and you feel the scale that I think extends to the power of a country like Hyrule. As it is a transition from established puzzle solving system into chaotic action, I accepted Hyrule Warriors as a fresh interpretation. Since both products are separately masterpieces, I was expecting their combination to be more than a masterpiece.

Bunbunmaru: 9; The peculiar puzzle elements of Zelda are basically non-existent, but the tempo of the action is great and can be enjoyed comfortably. You are dropped in the system of “Warriors” but in the world of “Zelda”, and it’s so amazing that there is no discomfort in this combination. If you’ve ever played games like “Dynasty Warriors” or “Samurai Warriors”, then it will be easy to play for you. When locking on with z-targeting, for example, it helps make the boss encounters considerably like the Zelda series. The smiles of Zelda fans are going to be numerous!

I think the time frame really differs for when exclusive DLC is made available for purchase. I remember The Gray Fox costume for Metal Gear Rising taking a really long time to hit PSN and XBL after the game was released. IIRC, it was over a year. It was originally a GameStop exclusive.

Famitsu is trash.

Just keeping fingers crossed the DLC situation will be different in Europe. I've already pre-ordered for £30...don't really want to piss around.

Surely a possible full character list would be out by now, if people have beat the game... Hopefully there are some unlockables we haven't seen already.

The Malon dream goes on until it is proven otherwise!
