In an interview on the Square Enix European Blog, he talked about lots of things, one of the questions was about his favourite Final Fantasy game.
Previously I would have said FF-I and FF-VII were my favourite to play but while making Final Fantasy XV, some of the ones I’m referring to the most and the ones I’m drawing the most inspiration from and getting a lot out of are FF-III, FF-IV, FF-V and FF-VI.” Tabata-san says with a big grin on his face. “The more I look at them, the more I think – wow! They’re probably some of the lesser-known Final Fantasy games but I think there’s some really great stuff in them and they’re a really good help for making FF-XV.
It's interesting to hear that he takes III, IV, V and VI to be inspirations for XV. Do you see these inspirations in XV when you look at the recent trailers and information?

To read the full interview (and I recommend you do), you can view it on the official Square Enix European Blog here: http://eu.square-enix.com/en/blog/who-hajime-tabata

  • For sure the gameplay wont be one of the inspirations.
  • Maybe some characters (design/backstory) yet to reveal will be inspired by some characters of III,IV,V,VI.
  • Some enemies design (i wonder how Ultima Weapon would look like in FFXV)
And that would be all considering that some things like the game structure, world, plot points, lore were already decided before he joined FFXV

It's not story because the overall story was laid out for him by Nomura, which is "fantasy based on reality", which means "there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so", which means very grey in the moral reasoning. He promised not to change it. old FFs were more black and white than current FFs. old ffs were very fantastical and over the top, which defeats the purpose of down to earth characters and settings.

It's obviously not gameplay.

Nomura always said the worldmap will resemble old 2D FFs, which is true based on
. Old FFs had large maps that granted freedom to explore.

Enemy designs do resemble old FF monsters, such as Goblins. Leviathan summon looks more traditional.

Last time Maketika Armor was important and usable in mainline FF was FF6.

FF15 heavily uses crystals like old FFs but their most important role acts as resources to develop countries like Lucis into 1st class status.
