Yes 80's by normal rating system is a very good game, 8 out of 10 if you want. But, by metacritic standarts its mediocre at best.
I mean we don't know yet anyway, if im sure about gameplay, its really good since i played it, but i can't say the same about narrative and story, maybe its really garbage? Especially when you know that writer for the game is Dissidia one.
I think most of the concerns in the reviews will be story and writing, sadly.
In terms of story and writing, basing it off from the people who have finished the game and reported back, yeah I think it's gonna be dividing.
As for the gameplay, character development/growth, art direction, music, dungeon design, and side content, these are very likely be heavily praised since even the people who had iffs about the first half of the story unanimously agreed that these aspects were really great.
Another thing to note, the majority of the problems with the story is with the first half. Second half and conclusion was deemed to be very gripping and high quality.
As always, these are Impressions so they must be taken with a bit of salt.
Also, what bothers me the most with this early game leak that now its nearly forces me to finish the game as fast as possible to expirience story by myself, because im fucking impatient and right now can only rely on random people impressions. Like i need to see if there is a real problem or its just made up bullshit of some people who havent even played the game and just enters the spoiler thread to validate his negativity?
Enjoy the game fully at your own pace. You've waited a long time haven't you?
It's been noted by Sora (finished the game over on gaf) that the people who are bitching in the spoiler section haven't even played the game and are seeing things out of context.
Idiots who like to make as much noise as possible from what I can gather.

Yeah i heard that too, some people said that last chapters are really well directed. I think ill be fine with it since first half is probably gonna be just roadtrip.

Im trying to find something that makes the game get a low score, but so far nothing yet lol.
I mean, the art looks great, as well as the gameplay and graphics. Yeah, the only possibility is the story, but i dont feel like saying that FFXV has a shitty story. I just feel it has a pretty dramatic and breathbreaking campaign (as almost every Final Fantasy). Sooo im confident. And im not going to lose hope even with a low score. Actually i dont give a fuck about the reviews. I saw previews stating that they found the combat system was pretty "hard" to get, but that wasnt the case of most of us.
I will be disappointed though of course, because thats the last thing Square Enix needs.

That's exactly what i meant lol.
There is not a "moment" as for when to use magic... You are freaking free to cast ultima on a stupid frog dude... Its up to you. I mean yes, there are times when magic is suggested to be used (boss fights ecc) but its kinda intuitive. And you cant put that in the negative part of the game's review just because you kinda suck...
That's why im not really considering reviews. They want to be objective, but mostly end up being the other way around.
LOL dude i thought your picture was showing a jesus with the crown of spines (which would have been... weird) and just now i found out it was a Marlboro... That's because i never put effort into seeing it directly... TROLOL
Good lord - So I'm already in FFXV mode after having played the JP demo because I keep pressing circle in other apps like Amazon and Netflix instead of X.
That's exactly what i meant lol.

Guys I think I found a reason as to why some people think the story in the first half of the game is "lacking".
I have some examples to prove my point which will be put in spoiler tags because I'm referencing dialogue I've overheard in the first chapter months ago.
I'll also use a reference from someone who has actually played the game too, which does not have spoilers at all but I will still put it in the spoiler tag just in case.
It's kinda long but worth it I promise.
So I think most of us here know that the game will feature in game dialogue more so than actual "stop and watch" cutscenes.
This is how the story is being told in the first half, and there are two groups of gamers when it comes to how they respond to this:
1) Those who pay very close attention at all times when playing.
They listen to all passerby NPC convos in full, catch all the foreshadowing hints from dialogue between players (and NPC's) and are smart enough to piece together small bits of info together to form the whole picture.
2) Those who don't pay attention at all to over world dialogue between characters because they dismiss this "small talk" as unimportant.
They don't listen in on NPC convos, dont stop and take their time in talking to NPC's to unlock dialogue, and aren't able to piece together tidbits of info to form a whole picture.
Here are some examples of story pieces that were mentioned subtly in the game that you probably don't know about in the first chapter.
1/ Cindy's father dying a tragic death when Cidney was a little girl. This was discovered if you stopped to listen in on two diners gossiping in the Hammerhead diner. I heard the convo and it was very interesting indeed.
Also hinted at after the guys camp and Gladio explains that Cid is like a father to her and took her in at a young age.
2/ Cidney is happy on the outside but very cautious and has trust issues internally.
This was discovered when you walked around the world and Prompto wonders if Cidney is single and teases Gladio about being a Casanova and whether he'll try to woo Cidney, to which he replies she's not the type to put her guard down easily despite outside appearances.
He would love to try but he's too busy guarding Noctis to allow himself to chase after her.
3/ Insomnia has different monetary currency compared to the rest of the world.
Prompto has no idea what Gil is when they see the price tags in the Hammerhead shop.
I shared these on forums awhile back and, surprisingly, very few people caught on to these pieces of story.
This means that how much story you see (or don't see) is highly dependent on how observant you are, and how good you are at picking up subtle story giveaways.
Here's an example of someone who has played the game and reinforces my belief that this is how the story is being told.
I think that the final fantasy stories arent really related to what you hear/read during sub-quests, even though i always try to talk to every npc. I mean, you do have tons of additional infos, but its the main story that really makes you fall in love and matters (im thinking of FFIX or FFVII, but everyone really can be taken as example), so if they are referring to the "story" i think its regardless of the sub-quests. But i agree that this is not how a Final Fantasy should be played, nor an open world in general.
Also, if people are split between who says that the story is fantastic and who says it's shit, that's because FFXV is aimed to both old and new fans.
I guess old fans will still love the story since they are "used to" the typical ff narration; while new fans will be way more skepticals about the game.
So, being in the first group, i'm kinda chilled and know the game will be awesome... I mean, i loved the work Tabata did in Crisis Core hehe.

The examples I provided were my way of saying that this is how the story is being told. Cutscenes are being replaced with this mode of storytelling.
Honestly I can see people fast traveling between locations and missing out on a ton of dialogue (some could even be very important story pieces) because they are rushing.
I pay very close attention to everything. So situations where I have to point out to people what happened in a game because they zoned out is too common in real life I'm afraid.
I think this may be what's happening in the first half of the game.
What you said is really sounds like The Last of Us narration, but problem is that SE don't have good writers and sceneries, to do the same as Naughty Dog, and instead of utilize their strength which is great and powerful cutscenes, they chooses a wrong path, imho.
