I said it before and I'll say it again, I could not give two shits if I only play as Noctis, he looks he's all I'd use anyways.

Amen to that. In my case, as a e.g., the only FF where I used another protagonist was XII. Vaan wasn't suited to be the main lead at all...

I'm still not totally clear why party control is a deal-breaker. Are people afraid of another gambits-type system?

Noctis would be controlled by gambits if you switched to another party member, you know?
People just want to be able to play as other characters, simple as that.
