What's your take on the Crystal Chronicles franchise?

To me it looks like they tried a few things but most of it didn't work out.

I have good memories of the first game on GameCube, but nothing else. I think I'll try one of those games I get the chance, but I see CC as one of the lesser FF spin-offs.
Not a Final Fantasy in nature, really.
