I asked Takashi Tokita, what he thought of my favourite director, Motomu Toriyama. He summed him up pretty well I reckon.

"I think he is very unique creator!"

It's not wise to say bad things about the people you work with to the general public. So even if he really means it, answers to questions like this will almost always be positive.

You were expecting something negative? A lot of the fanbase might hate him, but he's on the Final Fantasy Committee and has directed more FF games than anyone for a reason.

all the games I've played directed by him were fun and had amazing gameplay.

the writing/story is flawed, but I think he deserves some praise.

I would have loved something more grounded and honest (because I think he's saying just what's politically correct). I don't think of Motomu Toriyama as a good director or as an asset to the FF franchise. And yes, FFX was a very good game, but had some of the same problems FFXIII had, specially its linearity and everything Kagari said.

Of course not. Stuff like this could cost a person their job as it can affect the work environment. Things could get awkward between Tokita and Toriyama. A positive response was expected. It's just common sense.

And if directing a ton of Final Fantasy games was a criteria to get on the committee, then Yoshida must be a fucking god as all he did was worked on one Final Fantasy game that he had to fix.

Not a lot of options to chose from apparently.

Wow. A "unique creator". Don't go crazy with your compliments, now! Seriously, unique is something you call a meal you didn't much like when you don't want to hurt the cook's feelings.

I didn't say it was a criteria, I said that in addition to being on the committee he's also directed more FF games than anyone else. Yoshida is on the committee because he made FFXIV great and he's the head of the online department.

Toriyama wasn't the main director for FFX anyway. He was just the event guy.
Still the first listed director and directed the sequel and he was credited with the special thanks for Tidus, Yuna and Sir. Jecht in Dissidia 012 which is what the director is credited for.

No, you didn't say it. I'm just saying that.

The guys on the committee have been with Square Enix for a while so they have work experience. They also seem to be the ones who are heavily involved with the IP nowadays and have worked on major titles involving the IP too.

Most importantly, they all have directing experience and have shown that they can handle the challenges of working on large scale projects. They've shown that they can lead a big team and get things done.

I kinda see it like this. Kitase and Toriyama are basically the old guys with experience and Tabata and Yoshida are the fresh blood with experience.

I really don't think there are a lot of good options within the company to chose from. One would think Nomura and Ito would be on the committee because of their heavy involvement with the IP for many years but they're not and probably for good reason.

Yeah, to be honest Nomura, Ito, Kawazu and Tokita are the only ones who come to mind.
