Based on reviews, if I were considering to buy it, I'd do it only if I wanted to know how the story ends. Ya know, after that XIII-2 ending. Reviews weren't so hot. Luckily, I don't have to make that decision, since a friend is going to lend it to me tomorrow. Yay!

Most of the praise the game got was directed towards the gameplay department. God knows what I'd enjoy if I didn't like the gameplay.

I haven't played it.

Hope that helps! :)

(Based on what I've seen though, I wouldn't go in expecting something faithful to how FFXIII and FFXIII-2 is set up.)

Its main redeeming factor for me was the combat and level of depth it offered. It is surprisingly deep if you take the time to learn the timings and mechanics during attacks, switching appropriately. Is it a great FF game? No. But given how much it can be bought for, and if you want to see the story to its conclusion, it's worth it imo. Great soundtrack, also.

Personally, I love it because it feels like an unfinished game. Somewhat poorly paced and relatively short, it doesn't take long to platinum, much less beat.

The combat system is fantastic and unique, being pretty much the game's only outstanding component. Meanwhile, the story is simply laughable, and the soundtrack is the same symphonic fare from the other two XIII games.

Most of the hatred it gets is because of the base assessment of "lol, Lightning". I think it's worth playing, as long as you think you'll like it enough.

I don't think I'm able to comprehend that statement.

I am probably a little biased since I loved all three games... It does depend on each person since everyone likes something different. I loved most of the Story and especially the combat system since I´m not really a fan of anything turn based or something close to that style so it was nice to see a more direct fight. I also do not see it as button-smashing. If you don´t use your knowledge about the monsters weakness you could really be in a lot of problems, at least later in the game and against more than one monster.

Maybe you should watch some Videos on Youtube about the game? You will get a good overview of the game and this may help you better with your decision, because it´s difficult to recommend you the game without knowing what you really like. I usually watch some Videos before I buy a game and that helps me quite a lot more than reviews
