If you did 100% of the missions in game, then final boss has some formula that kicks up his difficulty significantly (to level 99 or something). If that's the case - you need to leave and level your guys about 10-15 levels.

Nah, I've done about 55% of missions. What levels do you recommend? And what Espers?

I wish I could be more helpful but I really don't remember. I think sephirosuy had one of the better FAQs for this game but in the day and age of YouTube, a video would probably be better for you.
