At what point does being picky with games hinder your growth or future as a gamer?
When I first got into video games with Mario and Sonic I didn't even know what RPGs were. Once I played FF Legends I liked it but wasn't into it over Sonic (my favorite mascot as a young boy).
But once I played Chrono Cross I was spoiled as a gamer. I decided right then and there that that was the games should be. Deep in story. Beautiful visually. Full of a cast of characters you loved and talk about (or joke about) for years. (to the day I still make running gag jokes about Serge smoking a cigar after sex with Leena LOL)
But after 2010 I found it harder and harder to get the games I like. I want RPGs and Action RPGs. But not Tactics RPGs or First-Person POV RPGs. I know it's picky. And to some it may seem stupid to limit myself. But when I play games, the less like an RPG or an Action RPG it is the less I can full warm up to it.
Example: the second Ar Tonelico game. I like the character Croix (the lead). Like the battle system. But I didn't keep the game. Weapons never changed in looks. Too much sex comedy and S&M refs. 16-bit looks. Few anime cutscene or cutscene at all. Beat game once. Looked back on it with a mix of shame, enjoyment and then traded it to move on.
This problem continues with most games now. Other than certain ones when rarely come out now I can't see to stick with the games. I've even turned to non-RPGs to try and break this gamer's block. I've tried Dead Space (all 3), the Batman Arkham games (all 3), Infamous (all 3), Mass Effect (all 3), Assassin's Creed series (most of them).... But it doesn't seem to matter. The only games I can really go all-out and focus on are FFs, Tales, and KH games. It used to be .hack, Wild ARMs, Xeno games, and Grandia series were on that list too but they've all died off mostly.
I'm not sure what to do. I want to save money so I've sold my old systems and poured all focus into maintaining my PS3 and 4. But rarely do the RPGs I like come on them anymore. When my PS3 break again, do I ditch it too and focus purely on 4. Would that mean giving up on RPGs at the same time if I did that since PS4 was released in an age where turn-based RPGs are dying out?
