FFXV Deadeye the Behemoth

I'd like this thread to be a discussion about the boss of Episode Duscae, Deadeye the Behemoth. If there are any strategies you've figured out, or if you just want to gloat on the thread, you're free to do so here.

Noctis and co. were around the level 42-43 range when I succeeded in defeating Deadeye (without the summon). The battle took a little under 30 minutes, with Ignis and Prompto going down at the final stretch of the fight. Needless to say it was a messy fight, also a little too long for my tastes. I'm looking to perform better somehow.

How has everyone else been faring against him? I'm not sure if I've found all the Phantom Swords (though I did try to sweep the entire map), plus I'm not sure if the collectible frogs even do anything. Deadeye's parriable attacks appear so rarely, with the short parry window making them much worse than they already are. Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Start the fight by taking note of who the Behemoth is attacking. He will always focus on one person, and this is important. Most of the time the Behemoth will be attacking Gladiolus. Whenever the Behemoth isn't focused on you, move to his right side and attack.

When you have the Behemoth's attention, draw him away from your teammates. Time your party spends not being knocked around like dolls is more time spent by the them actually damaging the Behemoth. You may not notice the loss of DPS, but it does add up.

While distracting the Behemoth, I recommend warp dodge (L1 + O) to reposition yourself away from your allies, but try to use the normal dodge whenever you can. Make sure you're holding L1 in short bursts so that you won't use much MP, but also so that you can be ready to parry the Behemoth's attack. The parriable attack is quick and random, so always be ready for it. Successful parries will result in massive damage and will stun the Behemoth briefly. Also, Ignis' AI is set to guard Noctis, so you may find him getting hit a lot even when you're trying to lead the Behemoth away.

If you're feeling confident, you can throw in a Counter attack after your dodges. This is risky business, so equip a fast weapon to it. Do note that at a certain health threshold, the Behemoth will bellow loudly and become more aggressive in his attacks.

If allies are low on health and are actively in trouble, have them use a potion. Unlike Noctis, they have a hidden Active Time Battle mechanic for actions and will only perform them after a certain amount of time has passed. Be wary of this and be prepared to revive them should they go down. If they happen to lose some of their permanent health, multiple potion uses will bring the permanent health back up.

As for skills, Full Thrust was my main use for damage due to the high hit rate, high critical rate and low mana cost. Drain Blade is helpful in this fight to make sure Ignis focuses on healing the others. Dragon Jump is fancy but I don't see the use for it apart from startup invincibility. Tempest might bee good due to the defense negation, but I haven't tested it extensively.

[Strategy 2]

If you're planning on using Armiger to beat Behemoth, you can defeat him very quickly by utilizing states whereby the Behemoth is completely off-guard (not just on his right side). These states include when he's down (due to accumulated damage or parries) and when Prompto uses Bind Bullet on him.

Since Armiger requires a full MP bar and is only active for a limited amount of time, you want to keep yourself from dodging or using techniques as much as possible. When the Behemoth is off-guard, activate Armiger and spam your warp strikes, since these do the most damage. If you do end up spending some MP, a good way to get it back as soon as the Behemoth is off-guard is to parry. Noctis' spears have an MP recovery passive, so parrying the Behemoth actually nets you a significant amount of MP, which is usually enough to activate Armiger immediately. This strategy is risky but has a higher payoff.

That's pretty much it. Have fun with this boss battle for Episode Duscae!

It was designed to be defeated with the summon... Of course it would take very long to defeat him otherwise.
But I'm planing to do it anyway.. Can't get enough of dat combat xD

I like to see him as the end-game boss of the demo. To be honest, he seems to be more of a damage sponge than challenging. The only reason Deadeye managed to whittle my party's health down was because it was a long fight. We were doing very minimal damage to him. I hope endurance battles like this don't become a thing throughout the final game.

I'll be leveling the party some more down the line. Very curious to see how the level scaling affects the battle.

Still practicing, but I think the key to fighting him might be patience. It's very difficult to anticipate Deadeye's parriable attack. However, I learned that after attacking him a bit, he switches aggro to you. If you dodge a bit and wait, his aggro moves to another party member, allowing you to attack again. I still don't know how effective this is in getting a parry on him. However, it should be noted that reacting to his parriable attack is nearly impossible due to its quick and random start-up. This means that you're expected to hold the dodge button when he starts his attack, and then to follow up with a counter-attack right after.

When he has aggro on you, don't try to attack his side. It'll probably be a mess for you and your allies. It might be a good idea to utilize the dodge button during this time and to try land a parry. I'm not sure if this is a viable strategy, but it's worth a shot. The tutorial did say that combat was all about switching between offense and defense.
