Seeing that the FFVII Remake will expand and renew some aspects of Final Fantasy VII, do you think that Materia and Summons will have more lore behind them?
As it stands in the original, Materia is formed from crystalized Mako which holds the power of the Ancients / Cetra from within the Lifestream, but it's only really touched upon briefly. As for Summon Materia you just happen to find them and use them, with no explanation as to what these powerful beings are.
What if that changes?
Could there have been various tribes of Cetra throughout the world who harnessed the powers of these beings? For example a tribe of Cetra who built their foundations around Shiva would have harnessed the power of Ice. Halfway across the world there could have been another tribe who worshipped Titan, who harnessed the power of Earth. Etc, etc. It could explain why the various Summon Materia are scattered across various locations.
