I noticed that more and more threads about FF XV are created who are all over the place and can easily be compiled all in one general discussion thread so I thought like every other forum we should have a general FF XV thread instead where we can talk about all things FF XV instead of cluttering the board with dozens of different XV threads.

Final Fantasy XV was originally known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII and was a spin-off title and part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Collection alongside the main installment Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII (later re-named into Final Fantasy Type-0). It was announced in May 2006 as an exclusive title for the Playstation 3 console.

The game became incredibly hyped and the cause of much frustration for many fans for its unusually long development time (to date its the Final Fantasy with the longest development time by far) and lack of information and material. This caused some even to believe the project had been secretely abandoned by Square Enix. In truth however the development team instead had faced several unforeseen obstacles with the game, whose scope and ambition made the development team struggle over the years - most of all with the limits of what the Playstation 3 was capable of. When the next generation of consoles came closer, it was therefore decided to instead move the production of Versus to next gen consoles to avoid having to compromise on the games premises and to turn it from a spin-off game into the next main installment game in the franchise, whose announcement had been eagerly expected by fans for years.

On E3 2013, Square Enix officially announced that Versus was now Final Fantasy XV, would have several tweaks and changes to qualify it as a main installment FF game and would be released for Playstation 4 and X Box One.

The game will have a much darker and more realistic setting than previous entries and featuring an almost entirely male cast, led by new main protagonist Noctis Lucis Caelum, who is the crownprince of a ruling powerful family in the technologically advanced Kingdom Lucis, which protects the last remaining crystal. When the more medieval nation Niflheim (its name by the way is based on the norse underworld of the same name) invades Lucis to steal the crystal, Noctis and his friends become involved in an epic warl that most likely will go way beyond just the struggle for the crystal and change the world.

Noctis is accompanied by his close friends Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto, with the royal bodyguard Cor joining them later as well. many more characters have been confirmed to appear in the game, among them female protagonist Stella Nox Fleuret who is the heir of the kingdom Tenebrae (which along with the kingdoms Accordo and Solheim has already been invaded by Niflheim as well) and shares a mysterious ability with Noctis, which allows them to see a light connected to Etro, goddess of death and predict the death of others (Not to be confused with the Etro from FF XIII though!) Stella and a female as-of-yet unnamed Dragon Knight will join the group later on as well, most likely rounding out the main party.

One of the main antagonists is Niflheims leader, Idola Eldercapt, who is after the crystal of Lucis to use its power to build Niflheim into the most powerful of all kingdoms who will dominate the world of FF XV.

the setting of FF XV is quite unique and for the first time features modern high tech environments (such as Lucis) as well as medieval fantasy settings (such as Niflheim and the other kingdoms), blending the two distinctive styles of FF games for the first time to such an extent. the high tech world of Lucis is also heavily based on real life environments such as Tokyo, also reflected in the design of the characters.

the game will be the most massive and epic FF game yet, feature most likely an enormously great world and player freedom to explore that world. The world map, who has been absent from FF games since FF IX will return although in much more detail and splendor then in previous installments. Airships are set to return as well.

The gameplay will for the first time be action-oriented with free movement in battle and a blend of RPG and 3D Hackn slay action where battles and environments go seamlessly into another and environments can be used and destroyed during combat. Summons will also return but it is not known yet how they will look like and be implemented. Though the summon Leviathan has been confirmed to be in the game and we´ll see traditional staples like Bahamut, Ifrit, Shiva and Odin most likely as well.

The game is directed by Tetsuya Nomura (who is also the designer and overall supervisor of the games production) and Hajime Tabata (Crisis Core), written by veteran scribe Kazushige Nojima (who also wrote FF VII, VIII, X and XIII), produced by FF-veteran Shinji Hashimoto and with music composed again not by FF-Maestro Nobuo Uematsu but Kingdom Hearts composer Yoko Shimomura, who gives her Final Fantasy debut.

The games release date is still not known though most predict it to be in 2015.

FF X had also a well written story and amazing characters that I personally love and care more about than any other game in the world. I absolutely agree about the PS1 games but to me FF X was by far the most emotionally powerful of all of them.

I think the biggest letdown in terms of characters and story was XII though. Complete departure of everything I want story and characters to be like in a FF game. Deliberately of course but still not my idea of Final Fantasy at all.

You consider FF XII a masterpiece in localization? I think it has the weakest VA cast in the whole series. the fact that the characters are immensely flat and bland for a FF game doesnt help much either. Most of all I think that VA cast was just not memorable (same goes for the music by the way) while I think the voice cast of XIII was really excellent and perfect fits for the characters. And they were memorable. If I hear Troy Baker or Ali Hillis I recognize them right away in other games. I wouldnt recognize anyone of the XII VAs.

I will gladly take an ARPG with decent world map and a variety of big cities with larger-than-life skyscrapers to small villages. Also, I want to play something that is not pseudo-MMO or old school wannabe.

I don't agree about X characters to be honest. I never really cared that much for them except Yuna, Lulu and Auron, and Tidus at the end but again because Yuna was left alone... I agree with Omegaflare about XII regarding voice acting. It was weak indeed! However I don't agree that every XII character was flat. Take Balthier for example! Such a geniously, if I may say, written character, with an enormous mind, and so special personality! I believe that he is one of the best characters to be honest. I liked Ashe too in some ways. But that's where I stop... Unfortunately the story and the rest of the cast never made me care that much. I have to say though that XII had the most substantial dialogues in the FF history.

And that's where I come to XV, where I hope to find such dialogues, a great cast that will make me care about and a story that will blow completely my emotions. Graphics and Music are guaranted I suppose, they put they best out there for this project. As for the gameplay, PS4 and Luminous Engine are two doors to many innovations. And who knows best how to take advantage of such opportunities other than SE? The world map is not something that I really missed that much. X's and XIII's linearity was not a huge problem for me. Even though in XIII there was also a lack of an airship, I didn't mind that much. Freedom is of course truly welcomed though!

well X for me is such a special game in every way. I have never felt such a connection to a game before or afterwards again. It drove me to tears, it gave me powerful emotions like no game ever has. Just yesterday I was listening to the orchestra version of "To Zanarkand" while picturing some of the Tidus/Yuna stuff and I was assaulted with an incredible wave of emotion, just listening to it. The spring scene stunned me and gave me chills and the ending sequence just was an emotional explosion for me. Of course Uematsus unbelievable score in that scene (To Zanarkand and the Ending Theme of X are really the most emotionally powerful pieces Uematsu has ever done in my opinion. What powerful music!) evoked a LOT of those emotions. That scene when the fading Tidus holds Yuna one last time and then jumps? It was the most powerful, emotional experience in a game I ever had. I am so immensely emotionally connected to that game, the world, mythology and characters. Nothing has ever touched me like this before, nothing has ever touched me like this again. When I became a fan of the series in 1999 I wasnt a RPG player. I am still not. I am a die hard FF fan, yes but I am no RPG player. I dont play RPG outside Final Fantasy. I tried but they just dont excite me. They give me no emotional connection like I have with FF. Its like trying to date another woman while you are in love with someone else haha.

So from the beginning for me the most important aspect in a FF was the emotional one. Story and characters. The cinematic feeling and presentation where the game becomes a movie-experience. Thats what always made Ff special to me.

And FF X just really gave me EXACTLY that aspect on a whole new level. More emotional, more cinematic - exactly what I loved. It just gave me everything I could possibly ask of a FF game for me. The development with cutscenes, voice acting and making it more movie-esque was exactly my kind of evolution. FF X was a revelation for me. The damn holy grail of video games. Yes I am a massive FF X Fanboy and I will never apologize for it. If a game can give me that emotions and experience then I´ll love it unconditionally. You can probably imagine how much I am excited for FF X HD :p

Going from that emotional high of X to XII was ...well....its like stepping from the northpole into a desert. You are hit with something in the face that is the exact opposite and something that deviates completely what you have known so far. That of course was XII´s intention and I applaud them for having the guts to do that.

Now just to avoid confusion here - I dont hate FF XII. RPG-wise its probably the most massive, richest and open FF game there is. And it was fun to complete. But it wasnt the Final Fantasy I loved and felt so connected to anymore.

Several reasons for that (and pls excuse me for going offtopic, I will return this back to FF XV in a moment):

1. Story and Characters

usually to me the story and characters in FF I love are stories with personal close relationships, romance, friendships, a prolific strong main character with an equally captivating female protagonist. Stories that revolve around inner conflicts and emotions. Tidus and Yunas romance was emotionally the absolute pinnacle of the series for me. Coming down to FF XII after THAT was....sobering. FF XII´s characters were not memorable really. The only ones I could even remotely connect to were Fran and most of all Ashe (who was a really strong but emotionally just not very captivating character). Vaan as a main character compared to the impact and emotional resonance that Cloud, Tidus, Squall and Zidane had for me was a flat joke. I couldnt even believe that he was supposed to be the male protagonist. I expected another main character that was iconic and heroic and that I could forge a deep connection with - but with Vaan it was just "Are you kidding me" ? I think Cid (VII), Steiner or Zell were better fits for main characters in a FF game then Vaan was.

The problem was that FF XII´s story just wasnt emotional except for the beginning with the death of Ashes husband but that was pretty much it. The rest was a very dry, uncaptivating Star Wars-ripoff (sans something powerful and mythological as the Jedi and Sith in Star Wars). And not a good one at that. I am a major Star Wars fan but the story of XII doesnt even come close to that universe. It was mostly just political war drama which isnt a bad thing but without any emotional resonance to it. In short : In FF XII the story and characters were stripped off everything that I had a connection with in the previous FF stories and characters - something I hadnt experienced before with the series so especially after the emotional high of X that hit me pretty hard. That was the first time in my life that I looked at the end credits of a FF game and was nether moved, in awe or touched in any way. Like I said - sobering. Luckily that wouldnt happen again so far (no it didnt happen with FF XIII or its sequel either - both captivated me immensely emotionally, particularly the endings. It was to me actually a return to the FF I had missed in XII. Fancy that)

the Music

After 4 games with the emotionally and epic masterworks of Uematsu and one sequel (X-2) with much less musical quality but still emotionally powerful pieces here and there, the music of XII where Uematsu only composed the (gorgeous) title song was probably one of the biggest disappointments in the entire game for me. Nothing really had any kind of emotional resonance with me, nothing was catchy or made me go "Unbelievable!". I did like the Esper Battle theme and obviously Kiss me goodbye but sadly that was it. Worst FF soundtracl ever made.

3. Gameplay

Dont wanna turn this into a XII discussion thread since I know that quite a few peope like the gameplay in XII but it wasnt for me. Not at all. It was the first FF where I asked myself in the battles if I am actually still playing a Final Fantasy game or Warcraft. I am not a general RPG fan so while for a RPG fan this change might be welcoming I was greatly alienated by it. This didnt feel like playing Final Fantasy no more. On top of that the summon system (all my favorite summons were turned instead into airships and Fortresses, what the hell?) and the ridiculously underwhelming Mysth Teks (thats what they´re called in german, whats the english term?) are a complete joke compared to the AWESOME summon and overdrive system from X.

being able to control only the party leader wasnt a problem for me, you still maintained control over the characters actions and while lack of a proper battle screen was something I needed to get used to I could deal with it. It was that completely alienating feeling that bugged me when I attacked enemies. just a few characters hacking away at opponents in a most unspectacular way. If you´re gonna have an action-oriented battle system then it needs to be truly spectacular like FF XV or Lightning Returns. That look epic and big. FF XII looked like just another generic typical RPG that I have usually no interest in, wether its your warcraft, sacred, diablo or whatnot. I understand that RPG-fans might have been delighted by such a battle system for a change but its definitely not what I want in my Final Fantasy games. Again this was the only FF game so far where the feeling of playing a FF game just wasnt present at all in the battles. It rather felt like I was playing a usual western RPG that referenced Final Fantasy a bit here and there but thats it.

In the end I got used to it after a long while and took it for what it was and I did have fun with it (mostly because of the great world, freedom and presentation) - just not the feeling of playing FF.

And say what you want about FF XIII but at least to me those games returned that FF feeling that XII was devoid of for me. Wether in terms of characters, style of storytelling, design, music or battle system. It had its own flaws but at least it gave me back that familiar FF feeling. Which is why it kinda baffles me that some people here accuse FF XIII of lacking the feeling of a FF game, while they actually praise FF XII to have the feeling, grandness and style of a FF game. Not the FF XII I played, thats for sure.

So for FF XV what do I want ? Well I want characters that are emotionally captivating and have the familiar feeling of FF characters. With Nomura being in charge that however is pretty much a given, he has never disappointed me in that regard and his style is what I associate most with "my" FF anyway.

I want a story that is personal and revolves around the characters, their relationships, struggles and conflicts. I want it to be incredibly epic and cinematic (which luckily for me is exactly what Nomura is going for in XV). I want great emotions, fascinating villains, complex and epic mythology. I want these characters and the story to make me laugh and cry while also having insanely badass and cool moments and fights. I would also like a story that takes the rug from under you and has its Game of Thrones-moments. That is unpredictible and then resolves it all in a huge and titanic battle, worthy of the build up. I want an emotional strong connection between Noctis and Stella. moments of happiness, despair, love and betrayal (in the overall story)

I want the music to KICK ASS. To be epic, orchestral with rock mixed into it for battle themes but no more of this experimental pop stuff, please. This is a FF game. I want most gorgeous emotional themes that take your breathe away and angelic piano pieces. I want choirs in the final boss battle music, probably mixed with rock and orchestra (like Advent One Winged Angel for example).

I want familiar elements like Bahamut and co. as summons, Chocobos, many familiar enemy types (Bomb, Marlboro, Querl, Behemoth, Iron Giant, Tonberrys, cactuars etc.) as well as familiar magic spells such as Ultima, Holy, Flare etc.

I really do love the action oriented epic battle system. It is less restricted and more freeflowing but at the same time more spectacular and cinematic.

One thing I dont want is the FF games to "go back to what they were". Thats regression. Thats the death of a series. I certainly dont want FF to be like in the 90s or something. I want the series to evolve and not be a rehash of what people liked before. It should take risks, explore new ground while sticking with the strengths and the things that make it special. So I really love the development towards more action, more freedom but also more epic and cinematic storytelling. Its exactly the evolution the series should have for a next gen.

FF VII and X were groundbreaking as the first ones in their generations for what they did. I want FF XV to be like that. Be groundbreaking. Not just with the graphics but with the whole fabric of the game. Do things that were never done before, push the presentation and storytelling to a whole new level just like VII and X once did. Often the developers remember VII and X as the games "who did this first" and who re-defined the series for the future. Thats what I want Final Fantasy XV in the next generation. To be remembered as "The first game that was like that", the game that became literally the gamechanger.

Ultimately much like VII and FF X, I just want this game to be as awe-inspiring and epic as emotionally powerful.

However despite all this I am also very prepared to accept that the game will not deliver everything I want. Having too much of a skyhigh expectatin can be very dangerous. I dont want to be so hyped about it and have so high expectations that in the end the game could simply never realistically fullfill them anymore. We cant dissect it for every little thing that might not be the way we want it. Lots of people do this and end up in disappointment wether its about games or movies. I will not allow myself to do that and be too nitpicky and scrutinize every single damn thing about it under a microscope. If you do that with VII, VIII, IX or even X you will find flaws there as well that could ruin the game for you. Pick your battles is my way of going about it.

Seriously. How they went from the masterpiece that was FF12's localization to what we have now is baffling. Even FF14's VA is hit and miss a lot of the time - so much so I switched to the Japanese track.
Part of the problem is that VA's don't get paid very well, even when it comes to games, and lets not forget that this a localization by a Japanese company, and they have their own weird ideas about what something should sound like in english.

FF12 had a good cast, it was consistent for the whole game and made them believable.

I just hope when it comes to the voices, I just hope we don't get trash like Kiefer Sutherland.

Is it it wrong of me to say I am looking forward to the whole game and just one thing? heh. If I picked just one, I would say fights against the summons, looks like we will get some Shadow of the Colossus gameplay as we fight them.

Do you guys think we will see moogles in XV ? It would be interesting to see how they would implement them in such a dark, realistic setting and what they would look like.
Now that's something I truly want to happen. Playing FFIX, it reminded me again how much interesting a moogle can make the gameplay. They are cute (hands down), and because of that they manage to keep the balance, because all FFs are dramatical stories. FFXV's story seems extremely serious this time, and I think "saving moogles" would be a nice addition.

There was an interview around the time FFType-0 was coming out that mention that "The Moogle in Versus XIII look like the ones in Type-0", so its safe to say moogles will be in FF15

ah cool. I noticed that in the Nomura-styled FFs moogles barely make an appearance. In VII there was only Choco/Mog, in VIII there was only the Mogry kid card (but no actual moogles I think), in X and XIII there were no moogles either (though in X-2 Yuna had a moogle outfit and in XIII-2 obviously there was Mog but those were sequels not main numbered FFs). Actually the only FFs of the Sony-era that I know of that feature moogles in a bigger way are IX and XII - both games without Nomura involvement.

So will be interesting to see moogles in a Nomura FF. What do the moogles in Type-0 look like?

Do you folks think the XV OST will be Shimomura's magnum opus, or will the KH3 soundtrack surpass this game's? Has she already composed her magnum opus?
