I noticed that more and more threads about FF XV are created who are all over the place and can easily be compiled all in one general discussion thread so I thought like every other forum we should have a general FF XV thread instead where we can talk about all things FF XV instead of cluttering the board with dozens of different XV threads.
Final Fantasy XV was originally known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII and was a spin-off title and part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Collection alongside the main installment Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII (later re-named into Final Fantasy Type-0). It was announced in May 2006 as an exclusive title for the Playstation 3 console.
The game became incredibly hyped and the cause of much frustration for many fans for its unusually long development time (to date its the Final Fantasy with the longest development time by far) and lack of information and material. This caused some even to believe the project had been secretely abandoned by Square Enix. In truth however the development team instead had faced several unforeseen obstacles with the game, whose scope and ambition made the development team struggle over the years - most of all with the limits of what the Playstation 3 was capable of. When the next generation of consoles came closer, it was therefore decided to instead move the production of Versus to next gen consoles to avoid having to compromise on the games premises and to turn it from a spin-off game into the next main installment game in the franchise, whose announcement had been eagerly expected by fans for years.
On E3 2013, Square Enix officially announced that Versus was now Final Fantasy XV, would have several tweaks and changes to qualify it as a main installment FF game and would be released for Playstation 4 and X Box One.
The game will have a much darker and more realistic setting than previous entries and featuring an almost entirely male cast, led by new main protagonist Noctis Lucis Caelum, who is the crownprince of a ruling powerful family in the technologically advanced Kingdom Lucis, which protects the last remaining crystal. When the more medieval nation Niflheim (its name by the way is based on the norse underworld of the same name) invades Lucis to steal the crystal, Noctis and his friends become involved in an epic warl that most likely will go way beyond just the struggle for the crystal and change the world.
Noctis is accompanied by his close friends Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto, with the royal bodyguard Cor joining them later as well. many more characters have been confirmed to appear in the game, among them female protagonist Stella Nox Fleuret who is the heir of the kingdom Tenebrae (which along with the kingdoms Accordo and Solheim has already been invaded by Niflheim as well) and shares a mysterious ability with Noctis, which allows them to see a light connected to Etro, goddess of death and predict the death of others (Not to be confused with the Etro from FF XIII though!) Stella and a female as-of-yet unnamed Dragon Knight will join the group later on as well, most likely rounding out the main party.
One of the main antagonists is Niflheims leader, Idola Eldercapt, who is after the crystal of Lucis to use its power to build Niflheim into the most powerful of all kingdoms who will dominate the world of FF XV.
the setting of FF XV is quite unique and for the first time features modern high tech environments (such as Lucis) as well as medieval fantasy settings (such as Niflheim and the other kingdoms), blending the two distinctive styles of FF games for the first time to such an extent. the high tech world of Lucis is also heavily based on real life environments such as Tokyo, also reflected in the design of the characters.
the game will be the most massive and epic FF game yet, feature most likely an enormously great world and player freedom to explore that world. The world map, who has been absent from FF games since FF IX will return although in much more detail and splendor then in previous installments. Airships are set to return as well.
The gameplay will for the first time be action-oriented with free movement in battle and a blend of RPG and 3D Hackn slay action where battles and environments go seamlessly into another and environments can be used and destroyed during combat. Summons will also return but it is not known yet how they will look like and be implemented. Though the summon Leviathan has been confirmed to be in the game and we´ll see traditional staples like Bahamut, Ifrit, Shiva and Odin most likely as well.
The game is directed by Tetsuya Nomura (who is also the designer and overall supervisor of the games production) and Hajime Tabata (Crisis Core), written by veteran scribe Kazushige Nojima (who also wrote FF VII, VIII, X and XIII), produced by FF-veteran Shinji Hashimoto and with music composed again not by FF-Maestro Nobuo Uematsu but Kingdom Hearts composer Yoko Shimomura, who gives her Final Fantasy debut.
The games release date is still not known though most predict it to be in 2015.
